Kiwanis Projects in Vanuatu In almost 40 years in Vanuatu the Kiwanis Club of Port Vila has made contributions to an enormous array of community projects.  In recent times these have included:- Re-roofing schools in rural areas Relocation and construction of Mamas Markets on Port Vila Seafront Providing practical sanitation facilities at various schools Distributing over 35 shipping container loads of school equipment to over 100 schools from Aneityum to Torba and most islands in between, provided with the generous support of the Kiwanis Club of New Zealand.  These include:- – School books – Library books – Desks and chairs – Filing Cabinets – Folios, pencils, and paper – Sports Equipment – Roofing iron – Second hand clothing – School uniforms Assisting with the provision of a prosthetic limb Medical and practical support for patients requiring overseas treatment The Duck Race – Womens Cancer project Re-cycling projects Initiated “Clean up Vanuatu” activities in conjunction with Sir Ian Kiernan’s “Clean Up the World” campaign Assisted community groups with construction of catchments and installation of water tanks. Support for Vanuatu Cricket development programs Distribution of soccer-; basket-; volley-; and, net-balls to many youth and community groups Assisted community groups in construction of community halls and meeting places Provided assistance to Vanuatu Red Cross with goods to include in their disaster kits. Provided the Port Vila Hospital Childrens’ Ward with:- – Warm clothing to help patients and families that have to travel overseas for treatment – Reading books and videos – TV and video set – Furnishings – Toys Support for Vanuatu Womens’ Beach Volley Ball Team Port Vila Waterfront Beautification Program. Assisted Red Cross; Boy Scouts and Girl Guides of Vanuatu Supplied uniforms to Vanuatu Mobile Force Band Construction of footbridge for Kindergarten children access to their school Establishment of a High Dependency Room in Childrens’ Ward at Port Vila hospital Some of the schools that we have directly assisted in the past 5 years include: Port Elizabeth – Ambrym Malo PS Central School – Vila Vila East PS Latap Primary S-W Tanna Kwataparen Junior Secondary S-W Tanna Napangasale Junior Secondary – Tongoa Seaside School – Vila Tassiriki School – Moso Maskelynes and South Malekula Schools Megamony and surrounding Schools – North Ambrym Mele Village School Mele Village Kindy Peter Pan – Vila Vila North PS Malapoa College Matevulu College – Santo Onta PS – West Gaua Dorig PS – South Gaua...

The Beneficiaries of race week 2013

The monies raise during this years race week have been put to good use. Here is a list of the people and projects that Kiwanis have supported this year: Major Project – Creation of High Dependency Unit at Children’s Ward at Vila Central Hospital. Project Cost of over 3,000,000vt Footbridge at Mele Maat Kindy Unmat Primary School Photocopier Medical Laboratory – Specialist diagnostic microscope North-East Malekula – contribution to community women’s project for fish freezing and marketing activity Vila Central Hospital – Maternity Ward project Butterfly Trust assistance in providing specialist medical care to outer islands Vanuatu Beach Volleyball women Tanna FM Radio Red Cross – small items for kids in need Vanuatu Cricket Association Outreach Program in North Efate; Santo and Tanna Water tanks for Loman Island community and other locations Laminator; binder; external hard drive and whiteboard for Vila Central Library Books for Vila Central Library Pianos for Malapoa College and Central School Vanuatu Women’s Centre resources School equipment; books; uniforms; sports equipment for primary and secondary schools in all Vanuatu Provinces Assistance for the publication of the Nabanga Pikinini series of story books in Bislama; French and English Eco-puzzle program that will reach 500+ kindys and over 300 primary schools throughout Vanuatu Cement for community buildings Ongoing maintenance at Kiwanis racetrack at VAL Pacific Track improvements at VAL Pacific location Genetic improvement of Vanuatu horse stock Support for Tanna Police Department for Sporting Equipment. Clean Up Wharf Road Project

The Kiwanis Club of Vanuatu is leading a project to clean and improve the Wharf Road area consisting of the upgrading of the 4 shaded seating areas on the roadside facing Port Vila Bay which had fallen into disrepair and repair and replacement of signage in the area. Once this work is completed they will organize a Saturday morning with the Municipality’s truck & clean up rubbish on the road with everyone’s help. The estimated cost for all of the above is 1,000,000 Vatu which Kiwanis hope to raise from tourist orientated businesses in & around Port Vila. The Kiwanis have had a very positive response from SKAL members & their guests to Kiwanis request for funding this project & seek further assistance from the community to raise the additional funds. When work is completed they hope to have photos taken at the project site with Kiwanis, SKAL, Vanuatu Tourism Office & as many sponsors as possible to show what can happen here with the combined help of community interested people.
