Kiwanis renews its sponsorship towards Vanuatu’s Little Stars Summer School

It is a great pleasure and pride for the Kiwanis Club of Port Vila to have renewed the sponsorship towards Vanuatu’s Little Stars Summer School and increased it to VT300,000 for the January 2018 session. Vanuatu’s Little Stars Summer School (VLSSS) is a leadership camp for Ni-Vanuatu students to gain key skills and attributes to become the future dynamic leaders of their developing nation. VLSSS was founded in 2012, with the first summer school successfully completed by 30 year 6 leaver students from just a handful of primary schools across the south of Pentecost Island in January 2013. Following a very successful first year VLSSS grew for January 2014 to take 42 students from primary schools across the whole of Pentecost. In January 2015 there were 69 students, the school now running a Francophone stream as well as its original Anglophone stream, meaning that every primary school across Pentecost could join the program. For January 2016, the school grew for its fourth consecutive year, with a total of 71 students in attendance from across the island. January 2017 was the celebration of the schools fifth anniversary, with a very exciting development. As well as a new cohort of year 6 leaver students attending the school for the first time, VLSSS welcomed back the graduates from the very first summer school, who had just completed year 10, for further encouragement and support on their journeys to success! The purpose of Vanuatu’s Little Stars Summer School is to allow students to grow in confidence in line with their ability, acquire valuable skills and break down barriers in their learning, inspiring them to strive to achieve and continually supporting them on their road to success. Threads Across Pacific – Textile Business Development Workshop in Santo

“Twelve women in Luganville, were very fortunate to access brand new machines and trainers (Caroline Mason of Threads Across Pacific and Janeth Kaltovei) who empowered them with quality sewing techniques and skills and creating new products.  The immediate impact is quite easy to see – demonstrating traits of quality sewing and a significant shift away from the usual textile products towards new product designs aimed at the growing tourist market.  Caroline has inspired and empowered the women in a very special way. Two of these, Vanessa and Ileen live with disabilities.  We are looking forward with excitement to work with these 12 women over the next couple of years.” Kalowie Robert TVET Systems Specialist (National Coordinator – Skills for Handicrafts) Skills For Economic Growth...

Kiwanis meeting’s Guests – 20th September 2016

On our 20th September meeting, we had the pleasure to welcome five very interesting guests. Our first guests Tricia and Williams gave a very interesting presentation on the Met Office’s project to upgrade the Cyclone Tracking Map with further information including drawings. They also bought a sample of a new Emergency Radio, which runs on a 12 volt battery, has solar capacity, can be hand cranked and fully tuned to the correct emergency frequencies . This is a project that Kiwanis may wish to assist with getting these radios into schools and health clinics. Williams invited all Kiwanis members for a tour of the Met Office which will be arranged in the near future. Our second guests Clint and Derryn also gave a very interesting presentation on the upcoming 2017 Pacific Games to be held in Port Vila in December 2017 including ways in which service clubs, individuals and businesses can be involved.  ...
